Pro Tools + Ableton Live ReWire: A Winning Combination for Film Scoring?

On their own, each is a compelling DAW to begin music for picture, or deliberative development: offering a radically different mindset towards music and score creation individually, could the combination offer a real game changing workflow?

With Live the creative hub and Pro Tools the video host, tempo conductor, sync timeline, [and eventual content delivery format, for printing stems prior to distribution, this offers a great workflow for sketching out film scores over long periods of content.

Cons with this Multi-DAW configuration: In ReWire Slave, Ableton Live offers no VST/AU plugin support. Thus, this specifies Ableton's role to being more of audio loop host/MIDI sampler, triggering any sound in the film flexibly via MIDI command.

Ross Hoyt's Exciting First Blog Post + Film Score Sneak Peek

This blog will serve as a place to discuss new music releases, audio projects I'm working on, and new music technology applications I discover. I will also cover music production practices, film composition strategies, and audio post-production which I work with on a day to day basis. More to come!

In the mean time, enjoy this piece of soundtrack music for the upcoming Interlock Media documentary 'Code Switching' about Boston's METCO program, and move towards racial and social integration in the Boston area since the 1970's. The song was composed and performed by the talented Boston area R&B/Soul artist Kyle Thornton.
